What comes to your mind when we say a fifties style wedding?
There is so much to love about the fifties; the war was over, rock’n’roll had arrived and the air was full of opportunities and hope. Things were changing offering new styles, confidence and possibilities. It was fun, exciting, quirky and positive.
The fifties bride-to-be had every right to be excited as choice had suddenly opened up. The second half of the fifties saw shorter wedding dresses available for young, up-to-date brides. Harpers Bazaar characterised the ballet-length (mid calf) dress as the career girls choice. ‘Ready to wear’ dresses came into department stores and bridal shops and manmade fibres (nylon, acrylic and polyester) made the dresses more affordable.
Today’s bride looking for a fifties style dress has the world as your oyster. So many designers have tea length dresses in their collections or be inspired by the longer figure flattering styles worn by royalty and film stars of the day. Have a good look around, you’re sure to find the dress of your dreams!
Many modern brides choose a birdcage veil as their hair accessory to wear with their tea length dress. This is a great look but do consider what will be in your hair once you take your veil off later in the day? I recommend wearing a gorgeous comb with your birdcage veil, not attached, so that later you can just have the comb and achieve a very different look. Other accessories that go well with the fifties look include lace embellished side feature tiaras or sparkly combs, they work so well if you’re having victory rolls or a more casual vintage look. Check out my images above and products below.
One of the greatest things about the fifties is that we are all likely to know someone who is old enough to really remember it. Involve your family or friends, have a chat about what life was like back then. You’re sure to make them feel happy and it’s a great opportunity to see some old photos or memorabelia to inspire your day!
Have fun together with your fiancé or friends gathering props from car boot sales, charity shops or borrowed from family and friends. They’re perfect for photos and inspire conversations around shared memories on the day. Typewriters, telephones, books, comics, radios etc all look fantastic and really set the scene.
